In celebration of Israel’s 70th anniversary, the Lawrence Family JCC will present the first public exhibition of a selection of photographs from the Viterbi Collection of Israeli Photographic Art. The images, from the 1910s through the 1950s, document everyday activities and events which, in any other society, might be considered mundane. For those performing these activities in the Land of Israel, and for those documenting them, they understood they were participants in a modern miracle. After nearly 2,000 years, the Jewish people were coming home to rebuild a state. The process was at times prosaic, but every field plowed, every cow milked, every widget manufactured, and every house built was a part of this miracle and worthy of documentation.

Photographers represented in the exhibition will be among some of the most significant in pre-State and post-independence Israel, including Yosef Schweig,David Rubinger, Boris Carmi, Marli Shamir, and Leo Kann.
